In her new memoir, The President and Me, Valerie Jarrett offers a candid and intimate account of her extraordinary relationship with President Barack Obama, from their first meeting in 1991 to the end of his presidency in 2017. As one of Obama's closest advisors, Jarrett was a key player in some of the most consequential moments of his presidency, including the passage of the Affordable Care Act, the end of the Iraq War, and the killing of Osama bin Laden. She also witnessed firsthand the challenges Obama faced as the first African American president of the United States.
Jarrett's memoir is more than just a political tell-all. It is also a deeply personal story about two friends who navigated the challenges of race, gender, and power together. Jarrett is open and honest about her own struggles, both personal and professional, and she offers a unique perspective on the pressures of being a woman of color in a predominantly white male world.
The President and Me is a must-read for anyone interested in American politics, race, or gender. It is a powerful and inspiring story about friendship, loyalty, and the power of hope.
A Deeper Dive into the Book
Jarrett's memoir is divided into three parts. The first part, "The Road to the White House," chronicles Jarrett's early life and career, as well as her first meeting with Obama in 1991. The second part, "The White House Years," covers Obama's presidency, from his election in 2008 to his departure from office in 2017. The third part, "After the White House," discusses Jarrett's life after Obama's presidency, as well as her thoughts on the current political climate.
Throughout the book, Jarrett is candid and open about her own experiences, both personal and professional. She writes about the challenges she faced as a woman of color in a predominantly white male world, as well as the sexism and racism she encountered throughout her career. She also writes about the challenges Obama faced as the first African American president of the United States, including the constant scrutiny he faced from the media and the public.
Despite the challenges they faced, Jarrett and Obama remained close friends throughout Obama's presidency. Jarrett was a key advisor to Obama on a wide range of issues, including healthcare, education, and race relations. She was also a trusted confidante, and Obama often sought her advice on personal matters as well as political ones.
The President and Me is a powerful and inspiring story about friendship, loyalty, and the power of hope. It is a must-read for anyone interested in American politics, race, or gender.
