Baby Darling's Early Life

Baby Darling was born Elise Hampel in Cologne, Germany in 1928. Her father was a communist and her mother was a devout Catholic. Baby Darling grew up in a working-class neighborhood and was exposed to the poverty and injustice that was rampant in Weimar Germany. As a teenager, she became increasingly disillusioned with the Nazi regime and its hateful ideology.

Joining the Edelweiss Pirates

In 1942, Baby Darling joined the Edelweiss Pirates. The group was founded in Cologne by a group of teenagers who were opposed to the Nazis. The Edelweiss Pirates quickly grew in size and spread to other cities in Germany. They carried out a variety of anti-Nazi activities, including distributing leaflets, painting graffiti, and sabotaging Nazi property.
