He is a powerful advocate for the innocent and a shining example of the power of hope and perseverance.
The Wrongful Conviction
On the night of July 25, 1973, a 21-year-old woman named Catherine Thomas was found murdered in her Detroit apartment.
A few days later, Street was arrested and charged with the crime. The only evidence against him was the testimony of two witnesses who claimed to have seen him fleeing the scene of the crime.
Street pleaded not guilty, but he was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
Street spent the next 23 years behind bars, fighting for his freedom. He filed appeals, wrote letters to judges and politicians, and never gave up hope.
In 1994, Street's case was taken up by the Innocence Project, a non-profit organization that works to exonerate the innocent.
The Innocence Project conducted DNA testing on evidence from the crime scene, and the results excluded Street as the killer.
In 1996, Street's conviction was finally overturned, and he was released from prison.
Life After Prison
After he was released from prison, Street dedicated his life to helping others who have been wrongly convicted.
He is a co-founder of the Michigan Innocence Clinic, which provides legal assistance to prisoners who claim to be innocent.
Street also speaks out against the injustices of the criminal justice system.
He has testified before Congress, and he has written a book about his experiences called "My Life as Temptation."
