Electronic dance music (EDM) has come a long way since its humble beginnings in the early 1980s. What started as a small, underground scene has now become a global phenomenon, with EDM festivals and events drawing millions of people each year.
In this article, we'll take a look at the history of EDM, from its roots in disco and funk to its current state as a major force in the music industry. We'll also discuss the different subgenres of EDM, and how technology has played a role in the evolution of the genre.
The Early Days
The roots of EDM can be traced back to the disco and funk scenes of the 1970s. DJs began to experiment with new ways to mix and blend records, and they started to incorporate electronic instruments into their sets.
One of the first pioneers of EDM was Giorgio Moroder, who is known for his work on the soundtracks to the films "Midnight Express" and "Scarface." Moroder's music was heavily influenced by disco and funk, but he also experimented with electronic sounds and synthesizers.
Another early pioneer of EDM was Kraftwerk, a German electronic music band that formed in 1970. Kraftwerk's music was characterized by its repetitive rhythms, electronic melodies, and robotic vocals.
The 1980s
The 1980s was a time of great innovation and experimentation in EDM. New subgenres of EDM emerged, such as house music, techno, and trance.
House music originated in Chicago in the early 1980s. It is characterized by its four-on-the-floor beat, repetitive basslines, and soulful vocals. Some of the most influential house music artists of the 1980s include Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, and Ron Hardy.
Techno originated in Detroit in the mid-1980s. It is characterized by its repetitive rhythms, hypnotic melodies, and industrial sounds. Some of the most influential techno artists of the 1980s include Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson.
Trance originated in Germany in the late 1980s. It is characterized by its uplifting melodies, soaring synths, and ethereal soundscapes. Some of the most influential trance artists of the 1980s include Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, and Tiësto.
The 1990s
The 1990s was a time of continued growth and popularity for EDM. New subgenres of EDM emerged, such as drum and bass, dubstep, and future bass.
Drum and bass originated in the UK in the early 1990s. It is characterized by its fast tempos, breakbeats, and heavy basslines. Some of the most influential drum and bass artists of the 1990s include Goldie, LTJ Bukem, and Roni Size.
